Reconnect with the world after a very busy year...
The courses described in this post are junior courses. We are only just starting with NCEA this year. However, I am hoping to employ a lot of these principles in my Year 11 classes, too.
Our classes are all integrated, so this is just "what we do". We have found NCEA assessments that align to the direction we expect the learning to go in our integrated Year 11 courses. Therefore, the projects are the context for the learning, and we expect the assessment to be part of the over-all (bigger picture) success criteria. For example, in a Math/Science course, learners are expected to put on a "Magic Show". Rates of reaction etc. will be vital for getting the timing right. The formal assessment within the learning will be Bivariate Data from Math, and Chemistry Investigation from Science...but true success will be putting on the show. Some learners are also going to be preparing for Acids and Bases (external) alongside this learning. This course is only 200 minutes per week for a semester, so only one of the Science-based courses on offer :)Mr Nicollhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02458545587026305713noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-328676961042593083.post-86668893076935019462018-06-25T07:41:15.081+12:002018-06-25T07:41:15.081+12:00Lovely insightful blog. I have made (and learned from) some disastrous attempts at giving learners the power to direct their "learning". So often, it is seen as an excuse to do nothing, and games, snapchat etc. start being the norm and needing managing. This is especially true at this age (Year 9). I have found that learners do not inherently know how to manage their own learning. The scaffolding, checking in, learning conversations etc. help keep the process on track. But these are much more enjoyable interactions than going around a classroom, ensuring everyone is attempting the worksheet etc.Matt Nicollhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01425549774267107543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-328676961042593083.post-90288723246096209552017-05-21T18:24:06.700+12:002017-05-21T18:24:06.700+12:00This looks like an awesome unit of work (both from...This looks like an awesome unit of work (both from a teacher's and student's perspective). You have said that this was "(on the whole) self-directed". I think you need to be careful with that term. New-ish teachers (like myself), have heard the term "self directed" learning, taken it back to our classrooms and given it to the students in the extreme. "Choose your own adventure!". It didn't work.

From what I can tell you have scaffolded the self directed learning, in a well designed unit/environment. That is why your "self directed learning" works, and mine was a disaster.
